The lyrics tell the story of a young couple. They both love each other deeply, but both feel as if their relationship isn't going anywhere good. In hopes that his partner will be "happier" without him, the singer decides that the right thing to do would be to break up with her so she could be happy, even if it means without him. This of course kills him, the thought of his loved one being with another man, but he feels he has no choice if he wishes her happiness.
Another way this song could be interpreted is if a boy has a group of friends whom he cares for and loves to a great extent. However, he hurts his friends and is forced out of the group. He deeply misses his friends, so one day he goes to greet them and ask for forgiveness, only to find that they are happier without him. His heart shatters, his world falls apart, because without his friends, he has no one.
The real meaning is that people change. Someone you thought you loved could be horrible, and someone you thought loved you could be just trying not to hurt you by hiding the truth. Talk.
